Kunle Olubiyo, President of the Nigeria Consumer Protection Network, has stated that the ongoing failures of the national grid, which frequently leave the country in darkness, reveal the shortcomings of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

In an interview with newsmen on Monday, Olubiyo commented on the sixth grid failure of 2024.

Infrastructurenews.ng had reported that the national grid experienced another collapse on Monday at approximately 6:48 PM, resulting in widespread power outages across the nation.

While TCN characterized the incident as a partial collapse and indicated that restoration efforts were underway, many areas remained without power at the time of this report.

Olubiyo criticized TCN for its insincerity in addressing the persistent issue of grid failures, claiming that the company has merely paid lip service to the challenges it faces.

“The recurring system collapses and the ongoing issues with the stability and reliability of the national grid are primarily due to a lack of genuine commitment and a history of superficial responses to a wide range of issues, as well as misplaced priorities by TCN’s management over the years,” he stated.

He pointed out that insufficient investment in network improvement strategies, a lack of system protective measures, and inadequate vegetation control are among the many challenges that have been largely ignored.

It is worth noting that grid failures were previously recorded on February 4, July 6, August, and September 19, 2024.

Data from TCN indicates that the national grid has collapsed over 227 times in the past 14 years. This situation has been exacerbated by a 240 percent increase in electricity tariffs in April, further intensifying the hardships faced by Nigerians.
