The Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors, or ANED for short, has issued a warning that if Band A electricity customers in Enugu State stick to paying the new rate of N160 per kilowatt-hour as set by the Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission’s Multi-Year Tariff Order, they might end up in the dark.

Sunday Oduntan shared this alert during a chat with TVC on Thursday.

His warning follows the EERC’s recent decision in their MYTO, where they instructed MainPower, a branch of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, to drop its Band A rate from N209/kWh down to N160/kWh.

This news has stirred up quite the buzz in the electric market across the country.

In his response, Oduntan cautioned Band A customers against getting too excited about the new rate announcement.

He made it clear that if Band A customers start paying the N160 per kWh as suggested by EERC, they could soon be facing spotty power supply.

“Listen up, if you’re in Band A in Enugu and they’re telling you to fork out N160 per kilowatt-hour, they’re pulling your leg. Eventually, you’ll notice your power going off more often. We’re discussing cost recovery here,” he said.

“We don’t want to revert to the dark days of power shortages. Things have improved thanks to the liquidity situation; those earlier times were rough due to a lack of liquidity,” he added.

DAILY POST reports that besides the Discos, electricity generation companies are also unhappy with EERC’s tariff reductions for Band A customers.

Earlier, the federal government made it clear that it wouldn’t suggest removing the Band A electricity tariff for states, as it’s already dealing with a staggering electricity debt exceeding N5 trillion.

Meanwhile, the Electricity Consumer Protection Advocacy group is skeptical about how EERC’s MYTO will actually play out for MainPower customers.
