The Federal Government has negotiated a lower cost for fixing the Iddo Bridge, bringing the price down from N27 billion to N17 billion. Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, announced this during a visit to the bridge in Lagos.
He explained that after long talks, the government agreed on the reduced amount. Umahi credited Julius Berger Nigeria Plc for cooperating under new leadership. He called the company a “born-again Berger,” praising the openness of its new managing director as helping to close the deal.
The minister stressed the government’s focus on spending wisely. He also said all contractors must follow the standards set by the ministry. The project scope has grown, changing from just repairing damaged parts to a complete overhaul.
Umahi showed concern about the bridge’s poor state. He blamed neglect and illegal activities, such as people building makeshift homes under the bridge. Three sections of the bridge were badly damaged by fire caused by these activities.
The damage to the bridge is serious. The minister revealed plans to raise the height to at least 5.6 meters for safety. He promised that nobody would be allowed to stay underneath the bridge again, emphasizing that lives come first. Umahi warned the government will no longer tolerate misuse of national infrastructure.
