To tackle the menace of gas flaring in the country, the adhoc committee in the House of Representatives has mandated the Department of Petroleum Resources, (DPR) to install meters that would curb the leakage of gas.
Speaking in Lagos on Monday, the Chairman of the Committee, Hon Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe decried the menace of gas flaring, adding that the leakage in the poses a major challenge to the oil and gas industry alongside other challenges such as inadequate funding of major gas projects, lack of effective monitoring and weak enforcement of sanctions.

According to him, the meter would help in harnessing the gas for positive applications in the country, lamenting that the cases of gas flaring is still going on in some parts of the oil rich Niger Delta region and is causing monumental revenue loss.
He said: ‘’From our preliminary findings, gas flaring is still ongoing in many oil and gas producing areas. This is unacceptable to the government.
“Nigeria has commercial gas reserves which should be harnessed for export and domestic applications. It is in the best interest of all stakeholders, especially oil companies, the Federal Government and states to bring gas flaring to an end. ’As a Committee, we will do our very best, including visiting all onshore and offshore platforms to monitor the operations of the companies.”
A member of the Committee John Agbonayinma charged the DPR to rise to its responsibilities, calling the body to come up with strict measures to curb the menace of impunity and corruption in the industry.
