The Lagos State Government has revealed that residents spend more than N13 trillion each month on electricity, a figure deemed unsustainable given the ongoing issues with unreliable power supply.

This information was shared by the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Biodun Ogunleye, during a press conference on Thursday at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Ikeja, in anticipation of the inaugural Lagos Energy Summit set for April 15–18, 2025.

Ogunleye emphasized that the enormous monthly energy costs incurred by both residents and the government highlight the urgent need for alternative and reliable power sources.

“You’ll agree that N13 trillion monthly is a significant expense, especially in light of the inconsistent power supply. This situation underscores the critical need for a more sustainable energy solution.”

In an effort to reduce costs and enhance energy efficiency, Ogunleye announced that the state will begin installing 22,000 solar-powered streetlights on major highways as the first phase of a larger renewable energy initiative.

He noted that the use of diesel-powered generators for street lighting has become increasingly impractical due to rising fuel prices.

“Although maintaining diesel-powered streetlights is costly, the government is dedicated to ensuring our streets remain well-lit. We are now implementing a sustainable solution, starting with solar technology. Installation will commence soon,” he stated.

The commissioner also mentioned that the upcoming Energy Summit, titled “Journey to Energy for All,” will provide a strategic forum to discuss the Lagos State Electricity Law 2024, the state’s evolving energy policies, and the vital role of the Lagos State Energy Regulatory Commission in meeting electricity generation and distribution goals.
