The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has urged Nigerians to familiarize themselves with their rights as electricity customers and to demand that service providers uphold these rights.
This statement was made by Aisha Mahmoud, NERC’s Commissioner for Customer Affairs, during a press briefing in Osogbo. The briefing was part of a three-day Customer Complaints Resolution Town Hall Meeting organized by the Commission.
Mahmoud explained that the meeting aimed to address customer complaints and gather feedback from them. She noted that many Nigerians remain unaware of their rights as electricity customers, despite these rights being detailed on the Commission’s website. The agency is committed to raising awareness to ensure that service providers meet their obligations.
“We are here to listen to customers, address their complaints, and resolve them on the spot,” Mahmoud stated.

“We have dedicated three days to hear from customers about their concerns regarding the electricity sector. Instead of waiting for them to come to us in Abuja, we decided to go directly to them to resolve their issues.
“This is our sixth or seventh location this year. Additionally, we aim to educate customers about their rights and obligations.
“We recognize that many Nigerians are unaware of their rights, even though they possess numerous rights. We emphasize that when customers pay for electricity, they are not just paying for the power itself but also for the services associated with it.
“They should demand that these services be delivered. Unfortunately, many are not aware of these rights, which are outlined in our regulations and available on our website. We are here to inform them that they have these rights and should insist on receiving the services they are entitled to.”
