Abuja-The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, said yesterday that more than 40 percent of Nigerians now enjoy 20 hours of electricity per day.

The minister, in a statement by his media assistant, Bolaji Tunji, explained that the success was achieved, after some revolutionary measures taken by the government to ensure that Nigerians have a more stable and regular supply of electricity.

The Federal Government, through the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, had in April this year removed the electricity subsidy for about two million tranche A consumers, with the assurance of “at least 20 hours of supply of electricity per day”.

NERC data for August showed average electricity production was 4,150 megawatts for an estimated population of more than 200 million people.

Adelabu said all this was achieved with the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as part of his economic revival agenda. Adelabu, who reviewed his first year in office as part of activities to celebrate this year’s Independence Day, said the increase in electricity supply was due to the measures radical and daring taken by the government.

“This achievement is the result of several revolutionary steps taken by the Minister of Power, with the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he added.

According to him, the president has always stood for the fact that Nigeria can become great and achieve progress in industrialization through stable and continuous supply of electricity.

He said that one of the main and significant achievements of his ministry during the past year was that “we are now producing more than 5,500 megawatts of electricity”.

He said the ministry was working to improve this record by the end of the year, since electricity supply is one of President Tinubu’s campaign promises.

Adelabu stressed the need for Nigerians to know that the stability of electricity in any economy cannot be overstated for most developed countries. “The first thing they did well was to get reliable, functional and affordable electricity, especially for their industries, businesses, institutions and families.

“That is why today we see major economies such as Korea, China, Europe and North America industrialize. The stability of their electricity supply has played a key role in their economic growth and industrial development.

“That is why we are saying that we must achieve this for Nigeria as a country. We must achieve the necessary economic growth and industrial development. Our beloved president, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, included this in the Renewed Hope Agenda as a key electoral policy for Nigerians.
