The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has clarified that the National Grid did not collapse but instead experienced a trip on Saturday, January 11, 2025.

TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah provided this clarification in a statement released on Saturday.

This announcement follows reports that the National Grid faced its first collapse of 2025, resulting in power outages in various regions of the country.

However, TCN explained that the Benin-Omotosho line tripped at approximately 1:41 PM on Saturday.

The company confirmed that this incident impacted the bulk supply of electricity to the Lagos area.

Following the tripping, TCN reported that electricity generation on the national grid was at 2,573.23 megawatts.

“Benin-Omotosho Line Tripping, Not System Collapse,” the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) stated, emphasizing that the national grid did not experience a collapse.

“Earlier today, at about 13:41 hrs, the Osogbo-Ihovbor line tripped, followed by the tripping of the Benin-Omotosho line. These consequently affected bulk supply to only the Lagos axis alone.

“It is important to clarify that at about 13:00 hrs today, just before the tripping, total generation on the grid was 4,335.63 MW. After the trippings, however, generation was 2,573.23 MW, showing clearly that the grid did not experience a collapse.

“The transmission line tripping affected Egbin, Olorunsogo, Omotosho, Geregu, and Paras, but these have all been restored except for the Benin Omotosho 330kV line, whose restoration is ongoing,” TCN stated.
