As part of ongoing efforts to aid metering processes across the country, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and electricity distribution companies or Discos have begun the licensing processes of meter manufacturers.
In line with the provisions of the Meter Asset Providers (MAP) regulations 2017 which has been released by NERC, the commission, said that its action was in line with the legal powers conferred on it by Section 96 of the Electric Power Sector Reform Act.
According to the Act, DisCos are empowered to conduct and conclude the procurement process for the engagement of MAP within 120 calendar days of coming into effect of the regulation.
The Act further says that upon completion of the evaluation of bids, the successful bidder is mandated to submit an application for the grant of a MAP license to the NERC and it would be granted.
Furthermore, NERC added that issuance of the license would still be determined by compliance with the minimum qualification criteria and procurement processes as stipulated by the regulation of MAP, adding that the tenure of MAP license would last for 15 years, in the first instance.
