Nigerian government broadens Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway to Edo¹

The Federal Government has triumphantly revealed the expansion of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway to encompass Edo State, disclosing that an extensive additional 100-kilometre segment of the ambitious project will now traverse through the state.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, unveiled this significant news during the splendid Edo State Independence Gala Night held at the State Villa in Benin City. He elaborated that this grand coastal highway initiative, originally conceptualized by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu nearly fifty years ago, had regrettably overlooked Edo State in its preliminary alignment.

“The route was previously introduced, but unfortunately, it did not account for Edo State. Today, the difference in length from 700km to 750km is due to a remarkable turn of events. The President has mandated that the highway must extend from Lagos to Ogun, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, culminating in Cross River,” Umahi articulated.

A statement from his media aide, Orji Uchenna Orji, conveyed the minister’s commendations for the residents and government of Edo State for their support of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda. Umahi reassured citizens of a prompt and superior execution of federal infrastructure projects in the state, notwithstanding enduring funding and infrastructural disparities.

Furthermore, he praised Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for his proactive role in the rehabilitation of the Benin–Sapele–Warri road, labeling the road segment a “death trap” for drivers.
