The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced its ability to transmit 6,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity to distribution load centers across the country.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday, TCN’s Managing Director, Mr. Sule Abdulaziz, highlighted the company’s recent upgrades to several substations over the past three years.

Abdulaziz noted that TCN has constructed new substations funded through its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and contributions from donor agencies. He also mentioned the installation of new transformers to enhance capacity.

“TCN has a detailed list of proposed projects, organized in batches, prioritizing those that require minimal investment for quick enhancements to the grid’s capacity,” he explained.

He confirmed that the grid’s capacity was assessed using a scientifically accepted method. “The latest grid simulation test indicated a capacity of 8,100 MW. In March 2021, TCN successfully transmitted 5,801 MW from generating companies to distribution load centers nationwide. Since then, we have continued to add transformers, upgrade transmission lines, and construct new substations, all of which have strengthened our grid capacity.”

Abdulaziz expressed confidence, stating, “We can comfortably transmit 6,000 MW and potentially more by the end of this year.”

He also emphasized TCN’s role as a key participant in the Nigerian Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), a project initiated by the Federal Government of Nigeria Power Company (FGNPC) aimed at addressing challenges in the power sector and expanding the transmission and distribution networks to achieve an operational capacity of 25,000 MW.

“Currently, several projects under this PPI initiative are underway, contributing to the grid’s capacity enhancement,” he added.
